Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, and nearly everyone will experience this bothersome issue at some point in their lives. Though most frequently occurring in adolescence, acne affects men and women of almost any age. If you’re suffering from breakouts and inflammation, our skilled physician, Dr. Shehla Ebrahim, can offer a wide variety of effective, established treatments as well as innovative new methods to help you develop clearer, more beautiful skin.
There are many different forms of acne, also called acne vulgaris, which can appear in a variety of ways, including white heads, black heads, pustules, papules, cysts, and groups of lesions. Acne typically develops when the oil-producing sebaceous glands become clogged with excess sebum (oil), dirt, and debris. The clogged pore can then become inflamed, swollen, and produce a pimple on the skin. Regardless of your symptoms, we have a series of treatments, detailed below, that can help you reduce the appearance and occurrence of these blemishes.

We are proud to be the first skincare practice in Western Canada to offer the state-of-the-art LumiCleanse™ system. This innovative two-part treatment involves the application of a topical light-activated gel on the affected skin followed by the delivery of multi-LED light therapy. Designed to target the underlying causes of acne, including excess oil production and clogged pores, this method can also stimulate collagen production for healthier, more vibrant skin over time. LumiCleanse™ is non-invasive and typically comfortable. For optimal results, this method should be performed twice a week for a six-week period. Each session usually lasts approximately 15 minutes. You should be able to return to normal activities immediately following the procedure, and LumiCleanse™ can be used alone or in combination with other effective measures.
Blue Light Therapy for Acne
Considered to be one of the safest, gentlest, and most effective treatments for acne available, blue light therapy is a type of intense pulsed light, or IPL, that uses a specific light wavelength to help reduce and even eliminate the appearance of acne by addressing the production of oil and bacteria in the skin. Considered to be a natural and painless option for diminishing blemishes, this method transports high-intensity pulses of narrow-band blue light into the area of concern. There are no damaging UV rays used, and the surrounding healthy skin and tissue will remain unaffected.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
PDT is a non-invasive treatment combining light and a special light-activated solution. The procedure involves applying the light activated solution to the area to be treated. The solution Another popular non-invasive method for treating breakouts is PDT, or photodynamic therapy. This innovative system also employs the combination of light and a photo-converter gel to help achieve dramatic results. As with all of our light treatments, a carefully chosen light wavelength will deliver therapy deep into the dermis (skin) to reduce oil, bacteria, and the potential for pores to clog while you relax comfortably in the chair. In addition to diminishing the number of blemishes that can occur, PDT also is designed to improve skin tone and texture overall.
Silk Peel™ Microdermabrasion
In many cases, treatment of the epidermis (top layer of skin) in combination with the foundational layers can help to produce faster, more effective results. Our Silk Peel™ uses microdermabrasion to gently exfoliate the upper layer of skin to remove dirt, bacteria, oil, and other debris directly from the pores. This technique is non-invasive and doesn’t require an anaesthetic. Furthermore, Silk Peel™ typically can be used on all skin tones and types, even if you have sensitive skin. We follow up the procedure with a highly moisturizing topical treatment for smoother, softer, and more supple skin.
A highly effective combination of rejuvenating ingredients, including retinoic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, and resorcinol, we often recommend the Vitalize Peel® as an excellent introductory method for achieving healthier, more beautiful skin. Strong yet gentle, this treatment can be repeated once every three weeks up to the recommended amount as directed by Dr. Ebrahim. This peel can be particularly beneficial when combined with a suitable skincare regimen tailored to your anatomic needs and cosmetic goals.
We offer a comprehensive selection of leading professional skincare products that can help you maintain your results at home. Dr. Ebrahim will recommend one or more formulas based on your customized treatment plan and unique anatomic concerns.
