Lots of people like to get “a little color” by spending some time in the sun; however, many individuals would prefer to avoid developing uneven, blotchy skin or brown spots. Beyond the obvious pigmentation, uneven skin tone absorbs light, resulting in dull-looking skin.
Intense Pulsed Light, also known as IPL, and Broadband Light (BBL) can be excellent techniques for treating melasma. IPL uses thermal energy to resurface the deeper layers of the skin and disrupt the pigment that causes melasma. BBL uses infrared energy to achieve a similar result. The delicate surface layers of the skin should be left unharmed. These methods also encourage cell turnover and can stimulate collagen production, leading to more youthful-looking skin over time.
Another technologically advanced option is fractional laser skin resurfacing. This approach works in a similar way to IPL and BBL; however, this method also exfoliates, or abrades, the skin’s surface. This technique can also promote skin regeneration and rejuvenation as well as minimizing the appearance of melasma.
