Red Face Treatment
At Ambleside Dermedics, we are proud to offer comprehensive treatment plans for our patients experiencing rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory condition usually limited to the central face. Rosacea symptoms can vary a great deal, but commonly involve a considerable amount of flushing to the lesions with tiny blood vessels called telangiectasia. Often small pustules (pimples) are present as well, hence, the name “acne rosacea.”
Rosacea symptoms occur almost exclusively in adult life and most often begin between the ages of 30 and 50 years. The course of rosacea has a tendency to be rather chronic with flares and remissions that are generally unpredictable.
Topical antibiotic lotions are often used in rosacea treatment, in conjuction with systemic antibiotics. Results vary depending on the severity of the symptoms.
Photorejuvenation / IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
IPL or Intense Pulsed Light, also known as photorejuvenation, is an innovative, non-invasive rejuvenation technique which involves high intensity pulsations of light (not lasers) passing through the skin. It is non-ablative, meaning no skin is removed. Its benefits include, smoother, more revitalized skin, improved texture and a reduction in pore size.
This breakthrough treatment involves directing energy to the treatment area. The energy is delivered to both superficial and deep layers of the skin, sparing the epidermis (top layer).
The result is an exfoliation of damaged skin coupled with the stimulation of collagen production on the skin’s surface.
The treatment can be used effectively on the face, neck, chest and hands.
It does not contain harmful UV light and is a very safe, effective and established treatment for a number of benign skin conditions.
The Laser Genesis procedure utilizes non-invasive laser technology to safely, discretely and effectively treat fine-line wrinkles, diffuse and excessive redness and help manage large pores, uneven skin texture, and scars. You can expect to see subtle yet consistent results after each treatment, without unwanted side effects such as bruising or excessive skin irritation after the Laser Genesis procedure. Laser Genesis Treatments can be performed in a relaxed, comfortable manner without the use of topical anesthetics or gel.
How does Laser Genesis work?
By gently heating the upper dermis well below your skin’s surface, Laser Genesis stimulates collagen regrowth. Additional heat is generated in dilated capillaries to reduce redness.
|Best Topical Treatment:||Metronidazole (available only by prescription)|
|Other Topical Treatments:||Azalaic AcidSulfacetamidePyrethrinBenzoyl Peroxides|
|New Topical Treatment for erythema:||NADH|
|Best Oral Treatment:||Oral antibiotics such as erythromycin, tetracycline and Minocin|
|Treatment for Vasoreactivity:||Clonidine (an anti-hypertensive) which can decrease facial temperature by 10C and has been used to treat flushing.|
Rilmenidine (Hyperium) is an anti-hypertensive drug used to reduce flushing. Other treatments for rosacea include topical NADH and its derivatives such as 1- methylnicotinamide (MNA) which has been shown to reduce redness, papules, and pustules but no change in telangiectasia. The mechanism of action is presumably due to its anti-inflammatory action.
Author’s Note: The only effective means of treating telangiectasia are with laser and light therapy.
In summary: The best treatment for rosacea is a combination approach including topical agents, systemic/topical anti-inflammatory agents, avoidance of provocative behaviors such as cold and heat extremes, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, appropriate UV protection, and laser/ light therapies to reduce telangiectasia and erythema.
